As ship-to-ship and ship-to-shore communications grow increasingly important to long- and short-term cruising, Mike Harris, a veteran sailor and the author of Understanding Weatherfax, offers this complete guide to all forms of communication at sea. He examines the international marine use of cell phones, satellites, amateur radio, and email, cutting through the jargon and sales hype and enabling readers to make the right choices for their needs.

Comprehensive appendices on radio procedure and tables of radio frequencies and broadcast times provide invaluable information not available from any other single source. An essential onboard reference for cruising sailors worldwide, amateur or otherwise, Communications at Sea will enable readers to keep in touch with families, banks, business contacts, and other seafarers while afloat.

“This book compares one communications system with another, explaining benefits and shortcomings. It should make for a better understanding of the subject, and make the choices easier. It is not a training manual, but it does answer the what, where and how questions on radio basics, VHF, HF, MF, and GMDSS, before moving on to alternative communications such as Citizen Band, various satellite forms, cellular, computer modes, etc.

“There are procedures, protocols and codes. It all forms a nice wrap-up of current communications technologies.”— Sailing & Yachting, (SA), April 2004

“will help you cut through the sales hype and see what systems really work for the cruising sailor.” —Latitudes & Attitudes
