A Brig of WarThe Nathaniel Drinkwater Series, Book 3By Richard Woodman240 pp. May 2001. Paperback. $14.95 ISBN 1 57409 125 5
Nathaniel Drinkwater earns a promotion to lieutenant of the brig HELLEBORE, but his routine convoy escort duties end abruptly when Admiral Nelson orders him to the Red Sea with an urgent warning for the British squadron stationed there. As Nelson pursues the French fleet to Egypt, Drinkwater discovers the malevolent influence of his old enemy, Edouard Santhonax, whose plans for a French descent on India are nearing fruition. The hunt for that elusive Frenchman overlaps with British naval operations during Napoleon's Egyptian campaign. Left for dead after an attack on Kosseir, Drinkwater escapes and subsequently stages a desperate attack on Santhonax, leading to a grim reunion with Augustus Morris, the tyrant of the midshipmen's berth on Drinkwater's first assignment, the HMS CYCLOPS. Guiding a half-armed ship to the Cape of Good Hope, Drinkwater contends with personal enmity, French activity, and the merciless violence of the sea. "Nautical novelist Richard Woodman arrives in New World ports with the first three of 14 installments in the Nathaniel Drinkwater series. Those looking for high seas action and historical intrigue are in luck." Publishers Weekly
