From the clash of mighty battleships at Jutland in 1916 to the cold splendor of the present-day Arctic, The Darkening Sea traces the fortunes of the Martin family through nearly 70 years of British maritime history.

From North Sea battle-cruisers in World War I and cargo-passenger ships on the exploited coast of 1930s China to corvettes hunting U-Boats in the North Atlantic and a WWII destroyer in the Pacific, the Martins find love, fulfillment, dissolution, and death.
