In the aftermath of a typhoon, Nathaniel Drinkwater brings the frigate PATRICIAN into the shelter of the Pearl River on the Chinese coast. While seeking the means to refit his craft, he becomes unwittingly entangled in a series of bizarre events that follow the British occupation of Macao and Admiral Drury's attack on Canton.

Subsequently assigned to escort a convoy to Penang, Drinkwater quickly discovers that the convoy's cargo contains a mysterious quantity of silver — and a single passenger. Betrayal, cruelty, and greed draw him inexorably toward a climactic rendezvous in the remote tropical rainforests of Borneo.
