Shipwreck or Shangri-la? tells the story of Peter Lickfold and his wife Tina as they follow their dream of buying a boat and sailing from their home in South Africa to Salomon Island in the Indian Ocean. En route they find themselves shipwrecked on the reef at Boddam, a remote atoll, where they have to rely on their own resourcefulness and the aid of visiting sailors to recover their vessel.
The Lickfolds ably adapted to life in their primitive conditions; they spent their nights on hammocks, and whiled away their days with fishing and taking care of their pets (which included a cat and a hermit crab), all the while fighting off rats, spiders, and scorpions, as well as dissent and despair.
About the Author:
Peter Lickfold was born in 1944 in Franham, England. At the age of 28 he emigrated to South Africa with his wife and three young children. In 1989 he abandoned the landlocked lifestyle and took up sailing. He now lives in South Africa, where he works as a draftsman in Richards Bay.
