This fascinating memoir from legendary sailor and ecologist Bernard Moitessier spans his entire life, from his magical childhood in Indochina to the final months before his death in June of 1994. Moitessier recounts the many daring sailing exploits that made him famous, as well as his earliest exposure to nautical life.
Moitessier first went to sea on junks, criss-crossing the Gulf of Siam. After leaving Indochina, he led the life of a sea-gypsy, wandering the Indian Ocean, South Atlantic, and the Caribbean. Then he entered the round-the-world single-handed Golden Globe Race, only to withdraw within sight of the finish line (as told in his book The Long Way).
William Rodarmor won the American Translators Association's biennial Lewis Galantiere award in 1996 for his translation of Tamata and the Alliance.
“He has an exquisite eye for imagery and detail…an enthralling book.” San Francisco Chronicle
