Robert Wallace Hudson, an downtrodden American charter boat captain struggling to make a living in the Caribbean, reluctantly accepts an impossible task. A friend introduces him to the unscrupulous owner of a small coastal freighter, who asks him to skipper an old rustbucket full of drilling equipment from Trinidad to Guadeloupe. Neither the ship nor the meager crew are seaworthy. Only unflagging determination, superior seamanship, and more than a little luck allow Hudson to overcome storms, leaks, engine trouble, and attempted mutiny to complete his assignment.
