The Complete Yachtmaster, 4th Edition

Sailing, Seamanship, and Navigation for the Modern Yacht Skipper

By Tom Cunliffe

from Sailing & Yachting (SA), March 2004

"This, like most of Cunliffe's books, falls into the "must read" category. Where it differs from the others is that it is specifically designed for sailors who have come a fair way along the road of sailing knowledge. It is designed for skippers and would be-skippers, and although there are some areas on which it only touches since they demand highly specialized treatment and books of their own, it does deal with all the basics needed to skppper a yacht from one location to another, along the coast or trans-ocean, safely and confidently.

"It offers practical, hands-on guidance, and Cunliffe's advice, garnered over many years of experience, comes through clearly and concisely enough to make it ideal companion to a yachtmaster course."

Excerpted from Classic Boat, June 2002:

"A quid more than when we first reviewed it in 1994, but now in colour, this is as practical a book on the theory of yachtmastering as is possible. Tom Cunliffe, RYA Yachtmaster Instructor Examiner, covers the syllabus of the respected RYA offshore exam with its emphasis on traditional (ie microchip-free) methods of navigation that give confidence to even the most electronics-loving sailor.

"This fourth edition includes a good chapter on GPS and radar with the right cautionary tone belying the usual London Boat Show salesman's 'this new plotter is all you'll ever need' tosh.

"As with most books like this, you probably won't read it all the way through. But that isn't a reflection on Tom's style, which manages to be at the same time both engaging and informative. Indeed while you can put this book down, you might not want to."
